What?

Why?

  • Fellows in this program gain experience in providing non-partisan, evidence-based assistance to policymakers on science and technology policy issues affecting West Virginia. They will also increase their awareness and engagement with the public policymaking process, and gain understanding of whether a career in science and technology policy is right for them.

Who?

  • Current WVU graduate students in STEM fields (including STEM education, health sciences, social sciences, and economics) who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.
  • Recent WVU degree recipients (within three years of degree completion) who are currently enrolled in a graduate program in a STEM field at another institution are also eligible to apply.
  • Preference will be given to PhD students with a demonstrated interest in science and technology policy.
  • Leadership for this program will be provided by Dr. Joan Centrella, Director of the Bridge Initiative.
  • Dr. Deborah Stine will manage the program and provide training and coaching for the Fellows.
  • Each Fellow will be placed with a host organization and mentor, who will provide supervision and guidance to the Fellow during their project.

When?

  • Orientation for the Fellows will occur in January 2023, likely during the week of January 9. The final date and time will be determined to accommodate the Fellows’ schedules.
  • Fellows typically will work approximately 8-10 hours per week, for up to 100 hours total during the Spring 2023 semester, on projects assigned by the host organization.
  • You can hold this appointment in addition to any full GRA support you already have.
  • Fellows will each receive a $1500 stipend and coverage for any needed fellowship-related expenses (e.g., travel, lodging, food).

Where?

  • Orientation for the Fellows will likely take place virtually, although an in-person option may be considered depending on the availability of Fellows.
  • The Fellows will work virtually or mostly virtually, depending on public health guidance, the needs of hosting organizations, and the availability of Fellows.
